How Does Air Conditioning Work?

Indoor Air Conditioning Unit

The Indoor Unit

Mounted on your wall, ceiling or hidden in the loft, the indoor unit quietly distributes conditioned air into your room. It contains the evaporator coil and fan — blowing cool air in summer or warm air in winter.

Outdoor Air Conditioning Unit

The Outdoor Unit

Positioned outside on a wall bracket, flat roof or ground, the outdoor unit expels heat in cooling mode or absorbs it in heating mode. Modern inverter compressors adjust speed to save energy — all systems are heat pumps, heating in winter too.

Types of Air Conditioning

The right system depends on your space, ceiling type and preferences.

Wall Mounted Air Conditioning

Wall Mounted

The most popular option. Fitted high on the wall, quick to install and the most affordable choice for homes and offices.

Ceiling Cassette Air Conditioning

Ceiling Cassette

Recessed into a suspended ceiling with 360° airflow. Ideal for offices, shops and restaurants.

Ducted Air Conditioning System

Ducted / Concealed

The most premium way to air condition a space — completely hidden, silent and draught-free when well designed.

Floor Standing Air Conditioning

Floor Standing

Powerful output at floor level. Great for conservatories, large windows and rooms where wall mounting isn't practical.

Air Conditioning FAQ

Answers to the most common questions about air conditioning systems, installation and running costs.

A single-room wall mounted air conditioning system typically costs between £1,500 and £3,000 fully installed, depending on the unit size and complexity of the installation. Multi-room systems cost more but are cheaper per room. We provide fixed-price quotes after a free survey — no hidden costs.

Modern air conditioning is surprisingly affordable to run. A typical 3.5kW wall unit costs around 10–15p per hour in cooling mode. In heating mode, air conditioning is 3–4 times more efficient than electric heaters because it moves heat rather than generating it. Annual running costs for a bedroom unit used regularly are typically £50–£150.

Yes. All modern split-system air conditioning units are heat pumps — they cool in summer and heat in winter at the touch of a button. In heating mode, the system reverses its cycle to extract warmth from outside air and deliver it indoors. They work effectively even when outside temperatures drop below freezing.

Most single-room air conditioning installations are completed in one day. The process includes mounting the indoor unit, positioning the outdoor unit, running refrigerant pipework, connecting electrics and commissioning the system. Multi-room and commercial installations typically take 2–3 days.

In most cases, residential air conditioning doesn't need planning permission under permitted development rules. However, listed buildings, conservation areas and some leasehold properties may have restrictions. For commercial properties, planning may be needed for external units. We advise on requirements during your survey.

We recommend servicing your air conditioning system at least once a year. Regular maintenance keeps efficiency high, prevents breakdowns, maintains healthy air quality and extends the life of the equipment. Commercial systems and those used heavily may benefit from twice-yearly servicing. F-Gas regulations also require regular leak checks on systems containing refrigerant.

Modern air conditioning systems are very quiet. Premium wall units operate at 19–22dB on their lowest setting — quieter than a whisper and virtually inaudible. Even on higher settings, most indoor units stay below 40dB. We specialise in silent air conditioning installations for bedrooms, studios and noise-sensitive environments.

Yes, almost any room can have air conditioning installed. The indoor unit goes on an internal wall, and refrigerant pipework is routed through the wall to the outdoor unit. Even rooms without an external wall can be served — we route pipework through lofts, voids or along discrete external trunking. We'll show you the best options during a free survey.
