What Will Air Conditioning Look Like in My Home?
A typical single-room system has one neat indoor unit and one outdoor condenser. These photographs show a real High Path bedroom installation in Godalming.
Inside: Compact and Quiet
The indoor unit normally sits high on a wall where it can move air gently across the room. We agree its position with you before work begins and choose a size and finish that suits the space.
Outside: One Discreet Condenser
The outdoor unit can sit at ground level or on wall brackets where airflow, servicing access and neighbour noise are considered. Multi-room systems can often connect several indoor units to one condenser.
A small core hole connects the two units with insulated pipework, a drain and control cable. The route is planned first, clipped neatly or enclosed in colour-matched trunking, then sealed weather-tight.
Wall-Mounted
The most popular and cost-effective choice for bedrooms, living rooms and home offices.
Floor-Standing
A useful option beneath low ceilings, in loft rooms or where high-level wall space is limited.
Neat External Finish
Outdoor positioning and pipework routes are designed to keep the finished installation unobtrusive.
How Heating and Cooling Works
Home air conditioning is an air-to-air heat pump. It moves heat between indoors and outdoors instead of creating all its heat from electricity.
Air Passes Through the Unit
A quiet fan draws room air through washable filters and across a heat exchanger, then returns it at the temperature you selected.
Heat Moves Through Refrigerant
Refrigerant carries heat through two small insulated pipes. There is no large air duct between the indoor and outdoor units.
The Cycle Reverses
In summer the condenser releases indoor heat outside. In winter the same system reverses and brings useful heat into the room.
Cooling
Removes heat and moisture, then modulates down as the room reaches the set temperature.
Heating
Provides fast, zoned warmth without waiting for the whole central-heating system to warm up.
Inverter Control
Adjusts compressor speed instead of repeatedly switching fully on and off, improving comfort and efficiency.
What Does Home Air Conditioning Cost to Run?
There is no honest single figure for every home. Cost depends on the system's electrical input, your electricity tariff, the weather, insulation, room size and chosen temperature.
Once the room reaches temperature, a correctly sized inverter system reduces its output and can draw much less power than its maximum rating. In heating mode, many modern systems can deliver roughly 3–5kW of heat for each 1kW of electricity under rated conditions.
We show you the proposed model's published input and efficiency figures before you decide, so you can estimate costs using your own tariff.
The Right System for Every Room
Every space has different demands — we size and position each unit for the best results
Bedrooms
Ultra-quiet 19dB units with night mode that reduces fan speed and dims the display. Sleep comfortably through the hottest summer nights without any noise disturbance.
Living Rooms
Wall-mounted or ceiling cassette units sized to cover large open areas evenly. No cold draughts, no hot spots — just consistent comfort for the whole family.
Home Offices
Maintain 20–22°C all day without opening windows or running noisy fans. Stay productive during video calls and focused through the afternoon heat.
Kitchens
Counteract the heat from ovens and hobs while maintaining good air quality. Modern units handle the extra heat load that extraction fans alone can't manage.
Loft Conversions
Lofts trap heat in summer and lose it in winter. Air conditioning is often the only way to make a converted loft liveable year-round, especially with limited ventilation.
Open-Plan Spaces
Large open areas need careful BTU calculations and airflow planning. We position units for even coverage across the full space without creating cold zones.
Conservatories & Garden Rooms
Our most popular domestic installations — we turn unusable spaces into comfortable rooms you'll use all year
Conservatory Cooling
Conservatories overheat in summer and freeze in winter due to the glass. Air conditioning solves both problems, turning your conservatory into a genuine living space rather than seasonal storage.
- Eliminates the greenhouse effect from large glass areas
- Heats efficiently in winter without running the main boiler
- Reduces condensation and humidity issues
- Compact units that blend with any interior
Garden Room Climate Control
Garden offices, studios and outbuildings are our quickest installations. External wall access makes fitting straightforward — most are completed in half a day with no mess inside your main home.
- Essential for anyone working from home full-time
- External access keeps installation simple and fast
- Single-room systems are the most cost-effective option
- Year-round use instead of just spring and autumn

Exceptional service yesterday from this company, efficient, polite, hard-working in 36° heat. They discreetly installed the condenser and external pipe trunking so that it didn't affect the appearance of my bargate stone cottage. I highly recommend.

Rob and his team installed air conditioning throughout my house in June. It was hot work for them as it was in the middle of a heatwave but they worked incredibly hard and did a really excellent job. Rob came over before the installation to discuss requirements and give advice on what units I needed.

High path air conditioning is a friendly and very competent family business. I planned to change my heating system from air source air to water to air source air to air. They quoted me an accurate price and that was what I paid. This dad and two sons team worked incredibly hard.

We have used High Path Airconditioning (owner Rob Halligan) for approximately 15 years to service our air conditioning at our offices. Over the years we have found them to be very professional in both dealing with the servicing of works and delivery of the work. If we have an issue between the servicing of the units they attend site within 24 hours, often within a couple of hours of the initial phone call.

Thanks to Rob and his team who were a pleasure to deal with from start to finish and we're very pleased with the end result. We had an air conditioning unit installed at home and they quickly came up with a plan of where was best to have it positioned and then all the routing of the piping and electrics. It all looks very neat and tidy.

Frequently Asked Questions
A single-room system typically starts from £1,500–£3,500 fully installed. Multi-room systems vary depending on the number of indoor units and the complexity of the pipework. We provide free, no-obligation quotes with transparent pricing — no hidden extras.
Most straightforward single-room installations are completed in one day. Multi-room systems can take two days or longer depending on access, electrical work and pipework routes. The expected programme is confirmed in your quote.
Running cost equals the system's electrical input in kW multiplied by your electricity tariff and running time. For example, a system averaging 0.5kW on a 25p per kWh tariff would cost about £1 over eight hours. This is illustrative; actual use varies with room size, insulation, weather and temperature setting.
Yes. The system is an air-to-air heat pump and reverses its cycle to provide heating. Depending on the model and conditions, modern systems can deliver roughly 3–5kW of heat for each 1kW of electricity under rated conditions.
Many domestic installations do not need a planning application, but rules and restrictions vary. Listed buildings, flats, conservation areas, leasehold homes and prominent outdoor-unit positions may need consent. We discuss siting during the survey and flag where you should check with the relevant authority or freeholder.
Selected indoor units can operate from around 19dB in their quietest mode. Actual sound depends on model and fan speed. Outdoor-unit sound also varies, so position, distance from bedrooms and neighbours, and reflective walls are considered during the survey.
Qualifying domestic air-source heat-pump installations are currently zero-rated under UK energy-saving materials rules. Eligibility depends on the installation and current legislation, so VAT treatment is confirmed in your quotation.
Annual servicing is a sensible schedule for most home systems and may be required by the manufacturer to maintain warranty cover. Filters also need simple routine cleaning between visits; we show you how during handover.
Mitsubishi Heavy Industries, Mitsubishi Electric, Daikin, Hitachi, Toshiba and Fujitsu. As an official MHI 3 Diamond Dealer — one of only a handful in the UK — we can offer extended warranties of up to 7 years on selected systems.
